SfN 2011 - day 2

so after a long night of 'bonding' with my lab, and a morning spent sleeping in to make up for the 22 hours of wakefulness the day before, i dressed myself up, grabbed my postertube (i.e., made my roomie/undergrad underling alexandria carry the postertube) and headed for the shuttle that would take us to mecca. there was mass organized confusion and chaos upon arrival, but we beelined for the poster hall, grabbed lanyards for our badges on the way, and pinned up our beauty at 1:06pm (our lateness was catalogued by joe & scott).

also, great job by aaron on his talk about white matter and attention - sorry i couldn't make it, and thanks for stopping by the poster :)

after speaking with some great visitors and gaining some great insight about my own work from a few, the poster session ended before i could get a chance to browse the topics i was interested in. all is not lost, for i have generated my itinerary for tomorrow and have these gems lined up:

- 10am, the much-talked-about neanderthal talk in hall d (isn't there a little neanderthal in all of us?)
- the art of networking nanosymposium from 9-12 in 146b
- morning posters about multisensory processing (nn), eye movements (oo), language acquisition and some neural basis of multilingualism (xx), the history of the human connectome based on literature by unofficial neuroblogger and zombie enthusiast bradley voytek
tim leonard, file photo.
- afternoon posters about more multisensory processing (i jones multiple senses, LL17 and onward), a juicy one on cortical activity in women during orgasm (apparently, there's a video...of the brain activity, not the orgasm...i think...), and one by my friend & york u colleague tim leonard, who will be sharing some insight onto the facial processing and the importance of ears, so check him out.
- 1-4, there are a bunch of great little talks about the social human animal in room 201, looks really interesting especially for those actually reading this blog & interested in neuroscience and human social behaviour and processing
 - there's a featured talk by dora angelaki (3:15-4:25 hall d) on optimization & multisensory integration with respect to our sixth sense (not like the shayamalan movie): proprioception, or limb and body position in space.

before retiring for the day, i was lucky enough to have an incredible dinner with my former undergraduate supervisor, dr. gillian einstein, and her wonderful group of female scientists at the tabard inn (burrata mozzarella/roasted red pepper/arugula crostini + mortadella tortellini in pistacchio pesto + a taste of the chartarelle/sweet pea/lima bean/squash risotto + fig and raspberry pie w/lemon meringue ice cream + a glass of white wine = bliss). we discussed many topics, both related to neuroscience and not, and i was asked to invite all of you lovely people to an informal talk taking place on wednesday from 11:30 - 1 about general topics in gender (not sex) and neuroscience. this will be a great way to casually meet fellow neuroscientists and discuss something really interesting. if i'm still here and not en route to toronto, i'll be with them at one of the round tables outside the exit of hall d.

lovely company at dinner (tabard inn, dc) with (l-r) deborah, me, allison, dr. gill, and emily!

until next time!
